Prom Night ‘09
Is there a restaurant left on this planet that still has a blue-plate special? Where, if you order your dinner by 5 o’clock, you get a discounted price? Old School and I have been looking for such a place. Somewhere along the way we’ve become our grandparents already because we love to have dinner by 5pm. Always have. I know I sleep better if I don’t eat after 6pm.
So that’s it! I like to eat early for health reasons, not because I’m old and cranky before my time.
Anyway, Old School and I had a Saturday night date last night and went to our favorite local fish restaurant. The greatest thing happened! The table next to us was full of high school kids going to prom!
The dresses, the ill-fitting tuxedos, the uncomfortable looks on the boys faces, the awkwardness of the whole thing! I couldn’t stop staring.
I should explain that prom has been a theme as of late thanks to our favorite chic-writer, Jen Lancaster. If you haven’t been following her blog, Jennsylvania.com, to see prom pictures from the 80’s, you’ve been totally missing out. What were we thinking with the hair, shoulder pads, drop-waisted dresses and ridiculously large bows?
The kids going to prom last night didn’t look a thing like I did when I went to prom (not a Gunny Sacks [sp?] in sight), and I’m guessing they won’t cringe too badly 25 years from now when they look back at their old photos. The girls were gorgeous and the boys looked like they were wearing someone else’s suit. Which they were.
My favorite is the kid in the lower left corner of the picture. He was wearing a t-shirt and sweatpants. He came in long after everyone else was seated and said something about playing basketball and showering after dinner (remember we eat early, there were very few people in the restaurant so we could hear everything and their table was so close Old School could touch it). Also, if you count the couples you will find only 4 girls and 7 boys. Group Date!
The guy I really felt for is sitting at the bottom right of this photo. He yanked and pulled and adjusted his collar so much I thought he was just going to take his shirt and tie off so he could enjoy his burger and Sprite. Yes, he had a burger at a fish house. You gotta love teenagers.
At the risk of sounding like someone’s mother, I just wanted to yell, “Can we all please put down our cell phones?” At any given time, several of them were reading, texting or talking on their cell (you’re probably getting concerned that I was paying a bit too much attention to this crowd and ignoring my husband on our weekly date, but he was enjoying it just as much as I was).
I snapped this photo as discretely as possible but the kid at the head of the table looking directly at my phone probably realized what I was doing. They were all so cute I couldn’t help myself.
I’m sure they all had a lovely time at prom and were home in bed by midnight….

I Want To Go To There
Thank you to Tina Fey for giving me just the right words to express my feelings as we head into our fifth month of snow, rain and chill.
I took this photo in Tucson on Christmas morning 2 months ago. Sure would be nice to feel the 85 degree sun on my face about now.
By the way, when my husband, whom I affectionately call Old School, says I want to go to there, he is referring to the new 17-inch MacBook Pro. He really wants to go to there.
