Do I look a year older? I don’t feel a year older.
This picture was taken exactly one year ago today, on my 44th birthday, at the Pro Beach Volleyball championship at Kings Island.
You may recognize the handsome face from Dancing With the Stars. He’s Maxim Chernovsky, who was partnered with Misty May-Treanor at the time. Misty, of course, had just won the gold medal at the Olympics a few weeks earlier with her volleyball partner, Kerri Walsh.
Misty May and Max were cramming in dance rehearsals whenever possible. That’s why he was sitting a few rows in front of us at the tournament watching Misty May play her first round match.
He was incredibly polite to everyone who approached him — he stood whenever someone came over to ask for an autograph or photo. Can you believe that?
You may recall, Misty May tore her achilles heel in rehearsal a few weeks into the show and never truly competed much. She had been doing well until then, but it takes a loooooong time for that injury to heal so I’m hoping she hasn’t danced since. Don’t hurt yourself just for a TV show!
Thank you to my friend, Kathy, who took this photo, and who called today to tell me she has tickets for us to return to the pro beach volleyball tournament next weekend. Can’t wait!
Today — it’s been a wonderful birthday so far — Old School and I took Sophie and Nomar to the dog park this morning. We met an Alaskan Malamute who weighed 130 pounds. He actually made our dogs look small. I’m so sorry I didn’t have my camera or IPhone with me to take a picture…..he was a perfect combination of a wolf and a bear. And was incredibly gentle. I just love big dogs.
Anyway, thank you to all my friends and family who have called, emailed, tweeted and Facebooked birthday messages! Old School and I are off to see the movie Julie and Julia.
